Who May Qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Government of Canada currently requires applicants to meet all four of the following eligibility requirements.

No Access to Private Dental Coverage

You must not have access to private dental insurance or coverage through employment, a pension plan, family member, or another qualifying private source.

Canadian Tax Return Filed

You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, must have filed the required Canadian tax return.

Family Income Below $90,000

Your adjusted family net income must currently be less than $90,000.

Canadian Resident

You must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes and meet the program's other eligibility requirements.

What Dental Services May Be Covered?

The CDCP covers a range of eligible oral health services. Coverage is determined according to the plan's rules, frequency limits, clinical criteria, and your individual benefit status.

Some treatments may require preauthorization before the CDCP confirms coverage. Not every dental procedure is included in the program.

Check your My Service Canada Account or your program confirmation for your coverage dates. Have your CDCP member information ready when booking, and ask the clinic to confirm your benefit status before treatment.
Are all dental procedures covered by the CDCP?
No. The CDCP covers a range of eligible oral health services, but coverage is subject to plan rules, frequency limits, clinical criteria, and in some cases preauthorization.
What information should I have when booking?
Have your CDCP member information and coverage start date available. Let the clinic know that you are covered under the CDCP when requesting your appointment.
What does preauthorization mean for CDCP services?
Preauthorization means the program reviews a proposed service against its coverage criteria when prior approval is required. Your dentist explains the clinical recommendation; the program makes the coverage decision. Ask whether approval is needed before starting the proposed service.
What if I missed the 2026–2027 CDCP renewal deadline?
CDCP coverage must be renewed each year. The 2026 renewal period closed on June 1, 2026. Renewals for the 2027–2028 benefit period will open in spring 2027. If you missed it, you can submit a new application for 2026–2027, but a gap in coverage can occur. Care during that gap is not reimbursed retroactively. Does CDCP cover dental implants or orthodontic treatment?
Implants and implant-related procedures are excluded under the CDCP Dental Benefits Guide. Orthodontic services are currently not available under the plan. Check the official coverage information before planning treatment.
