Accepting the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) at Mackenzie Smiles Dentistry

At Mackenzie Smiles Dentistry, we are dedicated to ensuring that every Canadian has access to the dental care they need. We proudly accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for patients. The CDCP is a federal initiative designed to make dental services affordable for Canadians who lack dental insurance and have limited household incomes. Here’s everything you need to know about the CDCP: its benefits, eligibility, and enrollment process.

Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program aimed at providing dental coverage for Canadian residents without dental insurance and with a household income of less than $90,000 per year. Those with an adjusted household net income of less than $70,000 will not have copayments. This program reflects the Government of Canada’s commitment to ensuring all Canadians have access to essential dental care.

Eligibility for the CDCP

To qualify for the CDCP, you must meet the following requirements:

  • No Existing Dental Insurance: You should not have access to any private dental insurance to be qualified for CDCP. If you have dental coverage through a provincial or federal government social program, you can still qualify for the CDCP. Where patients are eligible for CDCP and also have access to dental benefits under two Ontario programs(Healthy Smiles Ontario Program and Ontario Disability Support Program), the provider may be able to seek additional reimbursement for the portion of their fees that is not covered by the CDCP, up to the maximums in the provincial schedules, through coordination of benefits.
  • Income Requirements: Your adjusted family net income must be less than $90,000 annually.
  • Residency Status: To qualify, you need Canadian residency for tax purposes.
  • Tax Filing: You need to have filed a tax return in the previous year.

Coverage Details of the CDCP

The CDCP covers a comprehensive range of dental services, including:

  • Preventive Care: Routine cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants.
  • Diagnostic Services: Comprehensive oral exams and X-rays.
  • Restorative Treatments: Fillings, root canal treatments, and other necessary procedures.
  • Prosthodontic Services: Complete and partial removable dentures.
  • Oral Surgery: Tooth extractions and other minor surgical interventions.

How to Apply for the CDCP?

The CDCP will be rolled out in phases from late 2023 to 2025. The application process varies based on age and other factors:

  • For Seniors (65 and older): CDCP is now available to eligible seniors. For anyone eligible, ensure your 2023 taxes are filed and your address is up to date with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • For Other Eligible Individuals: Starting in June 2024, applications are open to children under the age of 18 and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. The program will continue to roll out throughout 2024 and into 2025.

Integration with Provincial Programs

The Ontario government has introduced an interim approach to coordinate the CDCP with other provincial dental programs, such as Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) and the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). This means that patients eligible for CDCP, along with HSO or ODSP, can benefit from comprehensive dental coverage, supplementing CDCP fees up to the provincial maximums.
